Blogging // 5 Ways to Transform Your Blog

Being a blogger is all fun and games until you realise this industry is now a serious business and you find yourself hustling with brands to make money and keep everything above board! My day job is in blogger outreach so I understand both sides of the spectrum, so I’ve compiled a fun helpful tips kinda post, focusing on the 5 things to remember when you want to take your blog to the next level! Spelling is everything It’s so easy to forget about spelling and grammar when you’re not really posting for a reason, other than to share your opinions on a new lipstick or a recipe you love. But when you’re collaborating with a brand or part of a bigger campaign, it’s good to remember to check your spelling and grammar. Whilst some of your readers might not care so much, brands and PR’s do, so don’t forget to double check brand names and ensure your post looks and sounds its best! SEO matters Similarly to point number one, including target keywords and …

Blogging // LivBloggersIgnite

So, Saturday was the big day – Liverpool Bloggers Ignite actually happened! I’ve spoken about hosting a blogging event time and time again, but back in February I decided to make it happen! After initially throwing the idea out there on social media, before I knew it I had a list of over 70 interested bloggers and then 40 who said they could make the proposed date! So, it looked like I actually had to turn this into a reality! #livbloggersignite took place on Saturday 1st April, thanks to Roja Pinchos who helped make the dream come true by providing their downstairs space, Instantprint for the branding on the day and the fabulous bloggers who turned out and made the day what it was – a success! With 4 guest speakers talking about all things WordPress, Liverpool high fashion magazine, Inspo, networking and public speaking and lastly, being a blogger in Liverpool, collaborating with brands and Liverpool Girl Geeks! Huge thanks go to – Edward Ridding Jurga Skeiryte from Inspo Magazine Jayne Croft from Future …

Online // Sharing Blogger Love

When I began blogging, some crazy 6 years ago now, blogging was quite an underground hobby. Having initially started Musings of Ruby, as this very site was named back then due to my bright red hair, the blogging community was small, fierce and loyal across social media. But nothing compared to what it is now, and how it’s grown since so many blogs have developed over the years and come to fruition in the last 18 months. I’ve read and followed blogs and their owners for many years and can identify different stages of a bloggers life by their style at the time or even their blog layout. So this post is to join the masses of others that share the blogger love and I’m gonna shout about my long-time and somewhat new fave bloggers! My favourite bloggers vary in niche – from fashion, food to lifestyle. All covering the many different topics I love to read about! Hannah Gale I’ve been reading Hannah’s blog for the last maybe 2 years now (has she been …

Life // Feeling The Blogger Pressure

Part and parcel of being a blogger these days is prep. When I first started reading blog posts they were diary-style entries with the majority of images taken on the bloggers’ phone. Outfit shots snapped in the mirror and product images taken wherever. But now, we’re dealing with a whole different ball game.    Just 6 years down the line, this little blog has undertaken a couple of re-brands including a name change (does anyone remember Musings of Ruby?!) and now blogging is big business. And this is where the pressure comes in. Writing up the post, taking perfect images to accompany, sharing across social media. Blogging is such a big business with so many of us creating amazing content – the pressure to get your blog to rank, grow and generate comments can sometimes make you wonder if it’s all worth it. I’ve said before that I don’t write to turn this into my career. I blog as I used to work as a Copywriter, but since taking a step away from Content and …

Life // Yearly Goals

Before I start this post, I must explain that I’m not the kinda gal who has loads of goals. Not cos I’m not ambitious or want to see/do things but because I’m kinda happy-go-lucky. Go with the flow. I like to plan my weekends and what restaurants I want to visit but I just try not to think long-term. I think this is mainly because you never know what’s going to happen. People change, circumstances change, you change. In the last 12 months I’ve changed jobs, choosing to go into a field I’ve wanted too for a while, but didn’t think I quite had the experience for. I’ve moved house; leaving home to live with a boy. And we got a dog. Something that defo wasn’t on the radar 6 months ago. But I have a couple of goals that I normally keep close to my chest, but thought why not share them and give them a shot at coming true? Own an expensive handbag. Yeahhh, so I thought I’d start off high priority, …

Food // Honest Burgers, Notting Hill, London

One thing I really, like really, love is a burger. I’m even known by my friends for my love for a McDonalds. But there’s something about a juicy burger, piled high with cheese, bacon and loads of sauce that I just love. So, when we passed Honest last weekend I knew we had to call in. Honest Burgers aren’t available up North just yet but I’ve seen them on Instagram before, so I thought why not. Plus my Mum loves a burger too, so I was in great company! The shop, is that the right word?, is small but so busy. With only a couple of burgers to choose from we were both torn between the cheese burger with stilton, which sounded amazing or the one we both actually went for – the beef burger with cheese, bacon and onion jam. It was amazing. All burgers come with rosemary chips too, which I liked as normally you choose your chips separately It was just so good and I really hope Honest Burgers comes to Liverpool …

Life // How I Get Motivated To Write New Posts

Blogging motivation comes from many different places. Sometimes, there’s a recipe or beauty product I just want to talk about, a restaurant I want to share or generally have ideas for posts in mind. But every now and again, I get stuck. Stuck for ideas and inspiration. It’s that age old dilemma of, something I find interesting to read about, my readers might not. But then I remember my blog is my own and whilst we all secretly deep down want the comments, the likes and our posts to do well; I realise I’ve got to enjoy my content too. So I scroll through BlogLovin to see what my favourite bloggers are talking about or I google list posts, which give post ideas for times like these, when I get stuck. I want my blog to keep ticking over, new content featuring regularly and it to continue to grow, steadily, like it has over the past few years. And so, that’s why posts like this very one appear. A slight step-change from my usual content, …

Food // The Aviary, Ormskirk, Restaurant Review

Since we moved to Ormskirk, I’m on a quest to try the many different restaurants and eateries in the area. And somewhere that caught my eye during a weekend walk was The Aviary. We (I) decided it was the perfect place to take our mums for Mother’s Day and it didn’t disappoint! Set just off the main road, it’s aptly named as there’s a huge aviary, next to the outdoor seating area and a field at the front filled with goats and llamas.  The attention to detail inside is just superb with staff who couldn’t be more helpful and a lovely bird themed décor with gold birdcage lampshades. There was a set menu and a choice of either 2 or 3 courses, but there was lots of choice, making it the perfect place to suit everyone! We all settled on 3 courses, with the pate and the fishcakes being our starters of choice. I had the fishcakes and they were divine. Served with a side salad and lemon and garlic mayo, they were light, fluffy …

Life // Weekend Treats

New lipstick, Glamour magazine, updating my diary sat in the sun on a lovely Saturday morning drinking fruit tea.    This was me yesterday morning. It was a beautiful day with a basic to-do list: sweep, do the ironing, relax. Those are my favourite kinda weekends. Yes it’s great to be busy and have a chocka-block diary filled with dates with friends and family. But I love the days when I’ve nowhere to go so I can just chill.  So yesterday I played with my new make up from NYX. I got the stacked lush lashes mascara and a lipstick in the shade Gardenia.  I’ve wanted to try this brand for a while so I popped into Boots in Manchester earlier this week and picked these up. I might do a full review soon.  See, a lazy Saturday at its finest!

Careers // How I Got My Job in Copywriting

I haven’t really blogged about my job before but with the blogging industry taking centre stage the last year or so and media type jobs, such as social media, PR, copywriting and blogger outreach becoming highly sought after careers, I thought I’d blog about my own career to date. I graduated six years ago with a Journalism degree from UCLAN and back then blogging wasn’t as wide-spread as it is now and I didn’t have a clue about SEO, PPC or that writing online could be a viable career! Eighteen months after I graduated and after a year spent working at Matalan’s head office in the Customer Services dept, a role came up in the E-Commerce department for a graduate Copywriter, with a knowledge of WordPress. Having started this very blog on WordPress two years prior,  I submitted my application. I worked as a Copywriter writing for the website, covering mens’ and womens’ fashion, kidswear and homeware for two years. I learnt so much those first couple of years that help me in my ccurrent …
