Life // Why Millenials Worry About Pressure & Expectations

I’m currently two days into a week off work and you know what? It’s lovely. We’ve not got any real plans, no day trips out, just lie ins, seeing friends and pottering around the house which we really, really needed. There’s so much pressure to do something when we take annual leave. Go on holiday, home or away, be active, get out the house. But life is so busy with work, weekend jobs and having a dog that needs twice daily walks that it’s nice to take it easy, have no major plans and actually spend time in the house we may a shit tonne in rent for every month. I felt last week like we should be doing stuff and I should feel guilty for wasting a week off. But I don’t. We read articles about millenials (a term I loathe) who strive for more, want to further our careers, travel, see friends and family but also how self care is super important. So this week I’m blending the two. Having a lie in …

Beauty // Discovering Lush Skincare

Until recently I’d never actually tried Lush Skincare products. It’s one of those stores that I find quite overwhelming to enter due to the sheer volume of people buying bath bombs like they’re going out of fashion. But when an email dropped in my inbox inviting me along to the Liverpool Lush store bloggers event, I knew this was my opportunity to learn a little bit more about the brand. The closed door event was simple – around 40 bloggers attended the event so it was great to bump into new and old familiar faces and we could try a variety of the products and chat to the super helpful staff about the products that would work for us. So this when I made a beeline for the skincare! Moisturisers and cleansers are my bag so I was really keen to get a better understanding of the product range and try a couple out. My skintype used to be quite oily but as I’ve gotten older and switched up my diet in recent months I …

Food // Liverpool City Guide

I think you could ask any Liverpool blogger to write a post about the many different things they love about the city and you’re sure to end up with an essay. Cos, sometimes, there’s just so much to be said and not enough words to express how you truly feel. When the lovely team at Northern trains got in touch, setting me the challenge of doing just that, I had to really think about where to start. I’ve already talked about my favourite brunch spots in Liverpool and how I would spend 24 hours discovering Liverpool ONE, but talking up the city as a whole and what you absolutely can’t miss/gotta see is hard! So, let’s get into a whistle-stop run down of my absolute fave things to do at the weekend in Liverpool – if money was no object! I’ve always wanted to stay over at the Titanic hotel but my boyfriend won’t let us, cos we live too close. I was lucky enough to attend their Christmas event last month in their large …

Foodie // 4 Best Brunch Spots in Liverpool

As soon as anyone mentions brunch, I’m there. The idea behind brunch is just genius when you think about it. You can enjoy stuffing your face with breakfast foods until lunchtime plus a glass of processo or a mimosa to accompany – the dream, right? And, if you’re lucky you may happen across bottomless brunch which is just an ideal situation for everyone involved! So, I thought why not begin to wind down to the weekend by sharing my top 5 hotspots for brunch in the city – Brasco Lounge Hidden away on Mann Island, just a stone’s throw away from the Albert Dock, you’ll find Brasco Lounge. It’s friendly, homely and dog-friendly too – bonus! Make the trip to Brasco Lounge over the weekend as their food is delicious and they don’t scrimp on portions. Perfect if you’re nursing a bit of a sore head from the night before. My top tip? Go for the All Day Brunch Burger or the Triple-Stacked Pancakes. Neither will disappoint. 2. Men’s Skincare // Introducing Moose Head

It’s a common gripe in my household that sometimes I get sent lovely packages from brands/PRs and my boyfriend asks if it’s something for him. Spoiler, it rarely is. So when the team at Australian men’s skincare brand, MooseHead got in touch to ask we wanted to try their new men’s skincare range it was a firm hell yes from us! Available at Primark, the collection consists of a facewash and moisturiser. So let’s hand over to Darren to get his opinion after using each of the products for the last three weeks… When Ruth told me I had my own blogger mail coming I was buzzing. I don’t really take too much notice of the products I use in the bathroom, usually grabbing what’s available so it was nice to have something of my own! The facewash is more like a scrub, as it’s quite grainy with a fresh scent. I use it morning and night in the shower and definitely feel more awake when I’ve used it. I have sensitive skin and a …

Food // Selasi’s Cherry & Plum Crumble

One of the complete up-sells about autumn is the whole hygge vibe. You know, getting cosy on the sofa, wearing pj’s none stop… (Although, this is a recurring theme all year round) and embracing autumnal foods. You know, cheese, pate and stodgy puddings. Whilst this may not be good for the ole waistline and that fact that I get weighed every Tuesday, I couldn’t resist giving a crumble a whirl. I’ll admit, I hadn’t actually made a crumble before, but how hard could it be? Well, once I’d guessed the ingredient quantities, not that hard at all, actually. The recipe in question was that of GBBO contestant, Selasi and was in cooperation with Vita Coco Coconut Oil. I’m quite the fan of using coconut oil, although it’s classed as deadly syns on Slimming World so I use it sneakily every now and again. And, this recipe seemed like the perfect opportunity! Ingredients 1 tsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil 4 plums – chopped into quarters 1 punnet of cherries – chopped in half 1 tbsp of …

Beauty // Three Skincare Products I Swear By

Since I joined Slimming World I’ve noticed a real change in my skin. It’s probably down to the lack of chocolate and crisps I allow myself to eat these days, but now the adult spots are a thing of the past and I’m enjoying the clearer skin, I decided a couple of months ago to start looking after it properly. I switched my foundation over summer to a lighter, BB cream so wearing less make up has had a massive impact and I’ve always been a cleanse, tone and moisture kindal gal, taking my make up off as soon as I get in from work. But I knew I should be doing more than just using micellar water and any old face wash I can pick up on the cheap. So, I thought I’d share the three products that are currently living on my bedside table and I’m using daily. I’m really enjoying taking that extra 10 minutes each night to care for my skin and these are three products I know I’d repurchase again and …

Beauty // Instant Beauty Fix Blogger Showcase

As a blogger and outreach gal, working and blogging in Liverpool, I really get the feeling that Liverpool is on the cusp of being the latest destination for blogging and influencers. With so many amazing bloggers and YouTubers creating fab content in around the city, co-hosting the online retailer, Instant Beauty Fix’s first blogger showcase event at The ClubHouse in L1 was an absolute joy. It’s rare that I get to talk about my job on my blog, but when the brand ethos and products appeals to our core influencer database, we had a feeling the event was going to be a good one and it’s a pleasure to be able to share it with you!     The event essentials were easy – a handful of beauty bloggers we know will engage with the brand and their variety of bloggers, a photogenic, open space we can sit and chat about all things IBF and lush food and drink…I like to think we delivered on all three! Instant Beauty Fix is an online retailer who …

Home // Winter Sun Bucket List

It’s always around this time of year that I begin to day-dream about holidays and getting some of that elusive winter sun. Your summer holiday feels like ages ago, it’s dark now by half 7 and I’ve already started about doing my Christmas shopping in a bid to try and box it off. So jetting away to spend a few days in the sun, with only my next cocktail to worry about sounds pretty dreamy, right? Holiday Gems are go-to when you’re playing holiday roulette (and attempting to avoid Ryanair flights for the foreseeable..) choosing where you want to up sticks and fly away to. I know some people love adventure and ‘doing stuff’ on holiday, but for me, I’m pretty happy when I’m lay down for about 7 hours straight, alternating between lying in the sun and hiding under the brolly so I don’t go too pink. So, for me, a pool is a must. Preferably an adult-only hotel and all-inclusive too, while we’re at it. So where’s on the wishlist currently? Morroco. We …

Beauty // Shades London Silver Toner

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ll know I’m not averse to changing my hair colour. Back in 2010, this very blog began under the name, ‘Musings of Ruby’ due to my bright red hair. However, once I decided to go blonde back in 2014, I re-branded as Ruth Writes. However, becoming a blondie means I’m forever searching for the perfect shade of blonde. Dark blonde, dirty blonde, platinum and my latest venture, silver/grey, are all shades I’m tried my hardest to obtain! Anyone who’s ever had red hair will tell you it’s a lot of upkeep and hard to get rid of (and I really, really miss it…) but silvery grey comes with its own set of rules! Luckily, I discovered Shades London in time and their easy toners are helping me make the transition to old lady grey. When I first applied this to my hair I must admit, I was nervous. It is bright blue and I looked like I was auditioning to join the Smurfs. My boyfriend raised an …
