Month: January 2016

Food // Avocado & Feta Toast

A simplistic brunch just made for the weekends. I’m a fully signed up member of the avocado club. Combine that with freshly toasted bread, crumbly feta cheese and a handful of ripe cherry toms and you’ve got a recipe for success.  It’s my weekend go-to when I’m relaxing at home cos it’s just so easy to make.

Interiors // Creating Our Perfect Kitchen

I first blogged about moving home back in December shortly after we’d moved in and when blogging took a backseat. But, now we’re nearing the end of January (the worst month for many) and the boxes are unpacked, I thought I’d blog more about our lovely 3 bed detached. As we’ve moved into a rental, we don’t have much leeway to decorate so home accessories are my new best friend. We really wanted a nice, spacious kitchen and we struck-lucky with this one. Built in the same style as a galley kitchen, it’s very long yet airy thanks to the window above the sink.      I love our windowsill as the blue tiles look lovely against the wooden windowpane and I’ve placed a couple of plants on here, as they add personality and light. Plus, I love it in here at the weekend when I’m pottering about and the sun shines in. Simple things ey? So, because we can’t go changing the kitchen cupboards or painting doors to add a pop of colour. Something I …

Beauty // January Favourites

I don’t really feature monthly favourites but I’m really loving taking the time each morning to do my make up and then take it off and leave my skin feeling fresh at night.     So let’s start with Sure deoderant. An essential I’m sure you’ll agree. I picked this up in a pound shop and I love it! Defo gonna buy this again. I got this primer in a My Little Box and I’ve used it every day since. It just glides across the skin and my make up stays on all day. Again, this Keratise hair product came from a beauty box and I use it before I dry my hair. It doesn’t feel greasy and my hair looks shiny once it’s dried and straightened.  Ren is a brand I’ve always wanted to try but the price tag was always out of my budget. So when I opened this months My Little Box I was over the moon! It smells amazing and takes my make up with just one cotton pad.  And lastly, Sinple …

Travel // 24 Hours in Edinburgh

Last weekend my Mumma and I headed up to Edinburgh as part of her belated 60th birthday present. We spent 24 hours in the city and managed to pack lots into our time. Things to see / do  Edinburgh Castle. Located just at the top of the Royal Mile, you get an excellent view of the city and it’s just amazing to look at. Afternoon Tea. We booked a reservation at The Dome and it was by far the best afternoon tea I’ve ever had. We were so looked after by the staff, the building was beyond impressive and the food, oh the food! Delicious sandwiches, dainty yet full of flavour cakes and two scones each. Finished with a pot of tea and glass of champagne, you couldn’t go wrong. The Shops – Harvey Nicks, high street & designer stops neatly tucked into the walls of the large streets and department store, Jenners on the high street. We were spoilt for choice! Drinks – It was recommended to me to try The Whiski Rooms. However …

Food // Date Night Cookbook

I’ve made no secret of my love for cookery books on this blog. From staring in my very own recipe book here to buying and reading new ones from cover to cover, I just love discovering new recipes to try. So, when the lovely Rebecca got in touch about her new book, the Date Night Cookbook, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! It’s filled with cute date night recipe ideas. From breakfast in bed ideas to movie marathon recipes – perfect for cosy nights in on the sofa!    The recipes are really easy to follow – no confusing ingredients which frustrates me sometimes and beautiful imagery and illustrations to match so you get an idea of the finished article! It’s such a beautiful book and one I’m probably going to fall back on when I want to make a yummy, delicious meal or snack in a hurry!

Home // Candles of the Month

As we progress through the first month of 2016, I’ve put all the Christmassy scented candles away and started to reintroduce fruity scents into our home. This strawberry Yankee Candle was a housewarming gift from my best friend when we moved into our house last month. We’ve had it burning away most evenings as the bright red colour matches the grey / cream decor and it smells amazing! It’s defo my favourite candle of the month! Check out my past favourite candles here.

Beauty // Annual Soap and Glory Haul

Soap and Glory are one of my favourite brands and every January my bathroom resembles an aisle in Boots as my family and friends stock up! I’ve currently got a mix of the old faithfuls and the new-ish lime scented Sugar Crush range on the go. Righteous butter and Clean On Me are my two faves as they just smell amazing and leave your skin feeling so good. I got a nice mix of hand creams too, which I think will take pride of place on my desk at work. Ideal for during this horrible spell of cold weather! I just love shopping at Soap and Glory, and they’re my go-to skincare collection for sure!

Food // My Penne Bolognese Recipe

Since we moved into our new home, I’ve loved having my very own kitchen and space to cook. I blogged last week about being quite poorly over the New Year but now I’m out of hospital and back home, I’m upping our veggie intake and getting into the swing of making meals from scratch again! So earlier this week I rustled up an oldie but a goodie, a spag bol. Well, without the spaghetti so I substituted penne instead.       What do you need? Lean mince meat or quorn if you’re taking part in veganuary Fresh veggies – go wild! I decided to throw in courgette, peppers, mushrooms and 2 red onions 1 tin of chopped tomatoes Mixed herbs to season Pasta! Spirals, penne or spaghetti – use whichever you fancy! Method to the cooking madness Chop up your veggies Brown your meat using oil to cook. I’m loving Aldi’s rapeseed oil at the minute as it smells amazing and it’s healthy too Pop your pasta in a pan with a pinch of salt. …

Beauty // Nivea Skincare

It’s been a while since I’ve covered beauty around these parts so what better time to get back into it than January! I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol now for 3 weeks and my skin and body are feeling so much better for it, but I need to re-address my skincare routine as it’s dropped off lately and I’ve been getting lazy. So, if I blog about it, I’ll remember to cleanse, tone and moisturise each night again! Nivea is such an old school brand, the one that you started using when you first bought moisturiser or face wipes with your pocket money in your teens. As I grew older I turned to niche products, but Nivea is always an old faithful. I love micellar water so I was excited to swap my current bottle of Simple to this one. It’s really gentle on the skin and it easily removes my make up in one wipe. Even waterproof mascara which is the devil to get rid off without leaving black marks! I don’t tend …

Food // British Military Fitness Recipe Book

So, something exciting has happened over the last few months and my blog has appeared in a recipe book! The British Military Fitness have created a recipe book of healthy recipes compiled by food bloggers and Ruth Writes has made its debut!  I love cooking healthy evening meals so I decided to put together a yummy chilli recipe for dinner. I wanted it to include all of my favourite ingredients whilst still being really easy to rustle up after work. Mixed Bean Chilli with Baked Sweet Potato So, what do you need? 400g of extra lean beef, turkey or quorn 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves 1 pack of passata 1 can mixed beans Chilli powder 2 Sweet Potatoes Frying oil – I chose to use avocado oil but coconut or rapeseed as just as good Get Cooking Chop your veggies and gently fry in the oil Add your meat to the frying pan Once the veggies and meat/quorn are browning add the passata Simmer whilst adding the mixed beans to the pan and the …

Life // Personal Health Update

So I’m currently on my second stint in hospital. A chest infection and sore throat quickly escalated into quinsy (I know, what’s that?!), a rare form of tonsilitis and now an abscess. Lovely start to 2016 hey? It all began last Monday with the pain growing rapidly. I can’t complain about the hospital staff as they’ve been fantastic. But it gets quite lonely / boring being lay in your small single bed all day. I’m hoping I’ll be home tomorrow where I can rest, recover and catch up on CBB which I’m gutted I’m missing. We always take our health for granted. Eating and drinking as we please, getting run down without stopping for a break. Right now I’m ready to get back to normal and get life underway again. So whilst I’m lay here with little to do yet refresh Twitter & Instagram, reading about January diets my plan is the opposite. Yes, care for my body and look after it as it’s been through the mill this last week but I can’t wait …
