The measure of success

Success. Such a small word yet measured on such a massive scale. We, as people, spend so much time benchmarking our worth against other – friends, family, work colleagues, yet we take little time to stop and appreciate ourselves.  Now is the time.    One person’s measure of doing well may be a house, possibly a family with the addition of children.  Another individual may look forward envisioning a career with natural progression and growth, whilst some are simply in the moment. Enjoying what they have, grateful for their lot and safe in themselves, content with what they have.   However success can stir the beast inside. Wishing, lusting after the latest designer handbag, must-have shoes, invites to the coolest parties, yet wondering how it all becomes a reality. We bench-mark our lives against others, constantly striving for the next but taking little time to celebrate the here and now. I’m on a quest, not as a goal, or even as new-found way of thinking, but I want to take the time to stop and …

Tasty Tortilla Pizza

Since the start of the year I’ve been following Slimming World. The first month I lost steadily, whilst the last few weeks have lead to a steady sustain, which is deserved after Valentines weekend and my Grandad’s 90th on Sunday. However I’ve found the perfect balance is just to incorporate it into your usual lifestyle, rather than treating it as a diet. Now I’m over two months in, I have figured out what works for me, how I can still allow myself treats, such as Friday wine and meals out, without overly rocking the scales. However, it’s nice to try new recipes and find yummy alternatives for my favourite foods. And, this week I gave tortilla pizza a go. Complete with my favourite toppings, it was delicious, yummy and didn’t fare too badly on the syn front either! Ingredients Tortilla Tomato puree or passata Low fat grated cheese Feta and smoked cheddar Green and yellow peppers Cherry tomatoes Simply load up, pop in the oven and you have a guilt-free dinner made in minutes!

Brunch: Poached Eggs and Avocado

Brunch pictures dictate Instagram on a weekend with delicious egg dishes, sweet and savoury waffles and cooked breakfasts taking centre stage. So, this weekend the sun has been shining and whilst many bloggers have been walking the cobbles at Somerset House, I’ve been working my way around the kitchen. I decided to try my hand at poached eggs with smashed avocado on granary toast. Having recently invested in a super sazzy egg poacher, I thought this would be the perfect starting point before I get adventurous and give Eggs Benedict a go. All you need is: 2  British Lion Eggs 1 whole avocado Bread for your toast – I opted for granary, but white or crumpets would be a great alternative I poached my two eggs, adding a little bit of butter to each case first so they didn’t stock. Whilst the eggs cooked, I smashed my avocado and topped on toast. I would defo reccomend this as a great weekend brunch as it was delicious and tasty, whilst being a super healthy choice to …

Rock on Ruby Clothes Swap Blogger Event

Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend the Rock on Ruby blogger event in Manchester. It was a fabulous afternoon, held at Font Bar near Oxford Rd station. It’s always lovely to attend events and meet a whole host of bloggers from across North-West. The theme of the meet up was a clothing, accessories and beauty swap. It was the perfect opportunity to have a little Spring clean and rid a couple of items from my wardrobe that I’d bought but still had the tags on, oops! There was a great turn-out and I managed to pick up a gorgeous long, gold necklace and a gold eyeshadow. I steered clear from the rails of clothes as I have too many as it is! As I was in Manchester I thought I’d head over to Primark and pick up another one of their coconut and vanilla candles which I blogged about here – I’m a bit obsessed at the minute! After a quick pit-stop for some lunch at Dough in the NQ and a visit to …

Primark candles: Vanilla and coconut

I’ve always been the kinda loves candles but rarely buys them, let alone light them. However a couple of weeks ago I was in Manchester shopping with my mum and we popped into the huge Primark. Whilst browsing the homeware section, I picked up one of the smaller 80p candles. It smells amazing and filled my room instantly. Even the boy suggested we light it one evening. So last week I couldn’t resist popping in to pick up a larger version. Next up, I plan to try the rest of the Primark range of candles!

Soup time: Carrot, Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash

I’ve spoken about my love for soup over here time and time again. Yummy, filling and super healthy, every Sunday I chuck a bunch of veggies together in a large pan with a stock cube and voila – my weekly lunches are done! This week I’m enjoying carrot, sweet potato and butternut squash. It’s quite a sweet mix so I’ve heavily seasoned with pepper and it’s good to go. What kind of soup are you enjoying at the minute? I’m always looking for new ideas!

Review: Illamasqua Multi Facet Palette

In my last post I talked about how I had always been the kinda girl who strayed away from palette’s…until recently that is. To accompany my new Avon eyebrow kit, I noticed on Twitter that Illamasqua were having a 60/70% sale, so I headed over to the site to check it out. It’s here where I discovered the Multi Facet palette in Aura was on sale from £40-0dd quid down to a bargainous £13,including free delivery. Before I could hesitate, it was in the basket and on it’s way. Previously I’d only used Illamsqua nail varnishes so I thought why not give the rest of the range a go! It’s a great compact size and contains everything you need to complete your face before you head out the door. There is highlighter cream pigment in Aurora. It’s a really natural shadow, which adds a little bit of depth and detail to your cheekbones. Alongside this, there’s the contouring power, again a nice natural brown. It adds subtle definition, without making you look to Kim K-esque! …

Review: Avon Perfect Eyebrows Kit

When it comes to buying new make-up, I tend to opt for single eyeshadows, brow pencils and blushers to name but a few. However, last week I decided to mix this up, investing my first palette’s, from Illamasqua and Avon, no less. Over the last year I’ve really started to invest in my brow routine. Having never plucked, waxed or removed one single hair from my brows, combined with very blonde eyebrows, I used to just leave them alone. But, last year I got a HD Brows kit in a Glossybox and here started a new love for adding a touch of definition and colour. My beloved HD Brows kit has since come to the end of its shelf life so I started to shop around for a new alternative. And Avon came to my rescue! This kit from Avon is super-sleek and I opted for the blonde version. Designed in a cute, compact, it has a wax and blonde/brown shadow and brush, so I can easily smooth my brows into place, whilst adding colour …

Viva Las Vegas glam with Thomas Cook

Last Wednesday I was lucky enough to be invited along to an exclusive blogger event hosted by Thomas Cook airlines. Divas Glam Vegas flew into Manchester, allowing us North-West based bloggers to experience the Vegas lifestyle for one night only. Held at the gorgeous Milton Club on Deansgate, we were treated to delicious cocktails, a make-up station and a Britney Spears lookalike no less – complete with a performance of Toxic The dress-code was sparkles, sequins and fabulous. I decided on a metallic gold shift dress – perfect for a day at work and a slick of dark berry lipstick applied on the train into the city. The event was nothing like I’d been to before. The team at Thomas Cook explained how it’s cheaper to fly from Manchester to Vegas, New York and Miami than anywhere else in the UK. And, they wanted to treat Northern bloggers to the glitz and glam that can only be experienced in one of the sassiest cities in the world – Las Vegas. It was so lovely to …
